Indie Rock

When people think of Indie they usually think of clashy, metal-like rock, with almost no meaning or personality. I feel sorry for you if this is your mentality, because you’re missing a lot of good music. And if you’re in to world music, this article should help you. Why? Because the music I’m going to share with you just happens to be from…. Sweden!

Peter Björn and John are an Indie rock band hailing from the Scandinavian country of Sweden. While slightly a new band, as they formed in 1999, they are very established with three albums. They are definitely not egotistic at all, as they first started making music for their own enjoyment –not to make money. However, something must have clicked, because last year they won the Swedish Grammis (their version of the Grammy Awards) for their video of “Young Folks.”

Peter Björn and John - Writer’s Block

Young Folks is actually a song you might have heard. It’s on their latest album, “Writer’s Block.” For example, it was on the series premiere of “Gossip Girl,”a popular TV show. I highly encourage you to watch their video on YouTube. It’s animated, though very clever. Another great song is “Amsterdam,” also on their most recent album.

In both songs, I find that they sound similar to none other than the Beatles. While a lot of people would most likely want to hurt me for saying something like that, I am entitled to my opinion. Overall, I find that they are a contemporary band, that somehow manages to sound classic.
