How To: Make Amazing Ice Cream Flavors

I know this technically belongs under “Food For Thought”, but I was thinking about ice cream, so voila: article about ice cream.

Step 1: Brainstorm. Think of how you are feeling and why you are making the ice cream. Are you preparing this frozen treat because you must bring a dessert to a dinner you’d rather skip? Try making garlic or anchovy ice cream. Feeling sad? Make a comfort-food blend of cookies, M&Ms, gummi bears, and others. Or, if you’re making ice cream just for the fun of it, try a dash of this or that, whatever catches your eye!
Here are a few ideas if you’re stuck:

  • Cucumber Raspberry ice cream (not as gross as you may think)
  • Saffron ice cream (for the adventurous palette)
  • Strawberry Fennel ice cream (tangy and fruity)
  • Cat/dog/bird/fish food ice cream (if you’re REALLY bored)
  • Fair-trade ice cream (use all organic fair-trade ingredients)
  • Cara-cara or Vanlencia orange ice cream (delicious on a hot day)
  • Lemon ice cream (use the zest too)
  • Once you’ve decided what you’re going to put in your ice cream, simply add the required ingredient(s) to the recipe specified in step 2.

Step 2: Making the Ice Cream

    • 1 tablespoon sugar
    • 1/2 cup milk or half & half
    • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
    • 6 tablespoons rock salt
    • 1 pint-size Ziploc plastic bag
    • 1 gallon-size Ziploc plastic bag
    • Ice cubes

    {If you already have a fancy-schmancy ice cream maker, then skip the rock salt, bags, and ice cubes.}

    What to do:
    1. Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt. Seal the bag.
    2. Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.
    3. Place the small bag inside the large one and seal again carefully.
    4. Shake until mixture is ice cream, about 5 minutes.
    5. Wipe off top of small bag, then open carefully and enjoy!
Lo and behold! Ice cream ready to eat!
